Bead Addiction

Last year second S had sent out a questionnaire to find out what people thought of our website and to get more ideas possibly to put on our website. One of the questions was what type of handmade craft item do you like to purchase and we gave several possible suggestions plus an open space to be filled in if the selections were not enough. Well a lot of people responded back that they purchase a lot of handcrafted jewelry. I had been resisting the idea of doing jewelry for 2 reasons: 1) the market was already saturated with handcrafted and handmade jewelry and 2) I knew if I started I would have a hard time stop making the jewelry. But with the results of that questionnaire in hand second S insisted that we make a small sampling and put them on our website. So we purchased a small batch of beads and I started making the jewelry. They were put onto our website.

Well since that initial investment into jewelry making I have made quite a few more pieces. However they have not been put onto our site since my sister (second S) has a limited amount of time to photograph them properly (she is the main caregiver to our mother who needs help due to her health). And also second S is in his senior year of college and very, very busy with school work. Meanwhile I have been making necklaces, bracelets and earrings like crazy. I spent some time recently over at my mom’s to help out with the care giving duties but instead ended up making jewelry. And making jewelry is very contagious since second S has now been designing the layout and the easy part of stringing the beads (I do the hard part of tying and fastening the clasps etc.). Then my middle sister came to visit and she got into the act of designing jewelry. Beads have become an addiction for us girls it seems. My sisters even started to dream of designs for new jewelry pieces.

Most of the beads used are glass but there are some that are semi-precious stones and metal. I am using magnetized clasps to close the necklaces but my sisters like the lobster claw clasp so the more recently made necklaces were made with lobster clasps. I also like the ring & bar clasps so there are several necklaces made with that style also. All earrings use the J-Hook findings (except one that I did just recently which is a clip style) and the bracelets are on stretch cord. The lengths of each piece varies.

If you are interested in seeing what jewelry I have designed so far you can check it out on our website: http://vkssholidaycrafts.com/ Enjoy our site and be patient with us while we try to get the new jewelry onto our site.

Nature’s Crafter

If anyone has gone onto our Pinterest boards and looked at Vilma’s board you will see that I have pinned some very unique looking minerals. I love Nature’s Craft. The past few years I have attended the Kansas City Gem and Mineral Show and have purchased some neat looking minerals. None of course as excellent as the ones in the photos on my board.

This past weekend I attended the show. I enjoyed myself so much as I always do. I spent over 4 hours there. There were some new vendors there and they had some great stuff. As always they also had displays of dinosaur bones, mineral types, how the earth was made and other really great stuff. The local schools, universities and rock clubs had displays there also. There were vendors there that showed you how to make things like flint napping, gold panning, and jewelry beading. And as always you meet the most interesting people to talk to.

The next Gem and Mineral show in Kansas City will be held November 1, 2, 3 at the Kansas City International Exhibit Hall. If you are interested in Nature’s Craft search on line to find the closest show and when it will be held. Enjoy yourself.

Review of Dark Parables game series

When I am not designing and making crafts I like to relax and play games on the computer.  There are a large assortment of various types of games.  I like to play Hidden Object, Match 3, Mahjong and Solitaire in the Tri-Peaks form.  Some of these games really get your brain working while figuring out where to go, what to do and challenging when playing a mini game within the game.

I recently played a series of hidden object games titled Dark Parables.  There are 4 so far, each one of the games take a fairy tale story/characters and make another story out of it where you the player, become the detective who has to solve the mystery saving characters along the way.  The hidden objects in all the scenes were not hard to find.

The first game is Dark parables:Curse of the Briar Rose.   I will mention now that what peaked my interest in playing this series is the graphics.  The scenes are very artistically done. The items to collect are decorative, colorful and creative. The stories also intrigued me.  This story involves Sleeping Beauty awakening after the prince kissed her, he then turns into the Frog Prince. The witch put Sleeping Beauty back to sleep by a curse with briars growing everywhere in the kingdom.   We ,as the detective, must hurry to end the curse put on Sleeping Beauty or else the briars  will envelop the kingdom and all will perish.

This was a fun game and clever twist of the story to play.  Most scenes were brightly colored, the cemetery was dark but not scary.

The second game is Dark Parables:The Exiled Prince. The story line in this game is the reimagined  story of the Frog Prince.  He is still alive in the Black Forest catching unsuspecting hikers.   We, as the detective, get called in to investigate when the chancellor’s daughter and bodyguard go missing.   The scenes are beautifully done , the music is also nice to listen to (on low) as you explore the forest, cottages, gardens and palace.   The story line really kept me in suspense and I was trying to figure out if the Frog Prince was friend or foe.

The third game in the series is Dark parables:Rise of the Snow Queen. This game we are investigating missing children in a mythical land called Snowfall Kingdom.  We have to solve why  the Snow Queen is capturing these children? This game had a clever twist as to the true identity of the Snow Queen.

I was having fun until I got captured and put in jail.  The hidden object scene there had 2 snakes. Yikes! I don’t like snakes so I was blindly clicking away hoping I would find all the pieces I needed. Once I did that I got out of there and hoped I didn’t have to come back. To my disappointment I did later in the game. At the end of the story all is solved and it introduces us to the next fairy tale in a cutscene (all of these games do this)  for the fourth game.  Dark Parables:Red Riding Hood Sisters.

The Red Riding Hood Sisters is a very clever extension to the Red Riding Hood fairy tale.  This sisterhood picks up after the Red Riding Hood tale.  We are working alongside the sisters, after we free them from the clutches of the villain. We have to find the 7th Moonstone so the kingdom does not go into eternal darkness. There was a surprise to this story that is revealed towards the end. Once again, at the end of this game a new cutscene gives us a hint to the next character and fairy tale for the fifth game. It should be just as good as the last four games have been. Can’t wait to see the beautiful artwork, interesting story, challenging mini games, but not too challenging, I don’t want to be pulling my hair out in frustration. Cutscenes  have an almost movie look.

If any of you like to play computer games, specifically hidden object adventure type I highly recommend the Dark Parables series.  V played this series as well and will give her comments later.

Charichers on Peanuts

I must be on a small items kick because I found another link to someone doing artwork on something unusual. This man paints portraits of people on peanuts. In this You Tube video he shows you how he does it.

He has great skill in duplicating the features of the stars he is making. Enjoy.

Amazing Pencil art

I was looking at Stumble Upon and came across this amazing link. An Hungarian artist has created art by using pencils. I don’t mean stacking or placing pencils to create an image. He whittles down the wood outer casing to the graphite center, then using small tools creates stuff from the graphite while still keeping the integrity of a pencil. You just have to see these images to be absolutely amazed at what he can do.

You can find it here

I wish I had the patience to do such delicate work. And the eyes too. He must use a magnifying glass and a very steady hand to get such detail in the graphite.

New Bracelet style

Hello everyone. This is V and I have been having Crafter’s Syndrome very badly this past week. I was looking through our Pinterest boards (DIY & Crafts) and ran across a bracelet that just screamed at me to make. Well I tried my best to forget that bracelet but it haunted me even in my dreams. So today I made 2 of them. The first one I made is pink ribbons on a white background for Breast Cancer Awareness. I am calling these bracelets cuffs because they are wide. They are made of very small seed beads (11/0 and 10/0 sizes) and safety pins. I wanted to put them on a metal wire so that I can slip them on and off easily but the wire I had on hand was either too thick or too thin. So I ended up using stretch cord. The second one is made up of black and clear beads in a random pattern. It turned out pretty cool looking. This one is a bit larger than the first one by 10 safety pins so it lays on my wrist better than the first one does.

Now just to get the other craft idea out of my head before I go crazy from lack of sleep.
